Online safety: Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is when someone uses technology such as social media, messaging platforms, or gaming platforms to send or post images or texts intended to hurt or embarrass someone else. Examples include:

  • Sending a threat to someone through text or direct message
  • Posting an embarrasing picture or video of someone on social media
  • Spreading a rumor about someone online

Like face-to-face bullying, cyberbullying can affect children mentally, emotionally, and even physically.

In the State of Florida, cyberbullying (as well as other forms of bullying or harrassment) is prohibited through the Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up for All Students ActUnfortunately, however, cyberbullying can still happen so it is important to understand what to do if you or someone you know is being cyberbullied.

TIPS FOR KIDS

Cyberbullying is not ok and nobody deserves to be cyberbullied. If you or someone you know is being cyberbullied...

  • Talk to a trusted adult (like a parent or teacher) about the situation.
  • Keep a record of incidents and don't delete any of the texts or messages. They can serve as evidence in case it is ever needed.
  • Don't cyberbully back. Revenge is never the answer!

TIPS FOR PARENTS

If you discover your child is being cyberbullied...

  • Teach them not to react or retaliate.
  • Help them collect and print evidence of instances they were cyberbullied.
  • Ensure your child blocks the bully on all platforms

While cyberbullying can't be 100% prevented, there are steps parents can take to help prevent their child from being cyberbullied or cyberbullying others...

  • Talk regularly with your child about online activities that they are involved in.
  • Consider installing parental control filtering software and/or tracking programs on your child's devices.
  • Educate your child about the consequences of inappropriate use of their electronics.
