Sheriff Rick Staly  

Sheriff Rick Staly began his law enforcement career in 1975 as a police officer in Oviedo and later in Altamonte Springs. After several years, he accepted a position as a Deputy Sheriff for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, where he served for 23 years, being promoted through the ranks to undersheriff or second-in-command of the fourth largest sheriff's office in Florida and the thirteenth largest sheriff's office in the nation. As Undersheriff he commanded 2,000 employees and a $120 million dollar budget. In 2001 he retired from Orange County but remained a fully certified Reserve Deputy Sheriff. In 2008, Sheriff Staly started a successful private security company in Palm Coast, Florida employing over 120 employees with annual revenue in excess of $3 million dollars. In 2012, the company was sold to a national security company.  Sheriff Staly served as the Undersheriff of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office from 2013 through 2014 and on November 8, 2016 was elected the 18th Sheriff of Flagler County. 

Sheriff Staly has a Master’s degree in Justice Administration from the University of Louisville and a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Rollins College. Sheriff Staly is a graduate of the 177th Session of the FBI National Academy, the Southern Police Institute's 79th Administrative Officer's Course and is Certified in Homeland Security. During his more than 40 years of public safety service, Sheriff Staly received numerous awards, commendations and medals, including the Medal of Valor, Purple Heart Medal and Florida Governor’s Medal of Heroism after being shot three times while saving the life of a fellow deputy sheriff.

Sheriff Staly is Past President of the Rotary Club of Flagler County, Past President and Board Trustee of Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida and a member of B.P.O.E. Elks - Palm Coast. He is also a member of the Flagler County Gun and Archery Club. Sheriff Staly has been awarded life memberships in the National Sheriff’s Association, International Association Chiefs of Police, Southern Police Institute Alumni Association and the Florida Police Chiefs Association. In 2015 President Barack Obama awarded Sheriff Staly the Presidents Lifetime Achievement Award. Sheriff Staly is an active member of the Florida Sheriff’s Association and the Volusia-Flagler Police Chiefs Association.

Sheriff Staly and his wife, Debbie, are members of Flagler Beach United Methodist Church and live in Palm Coast. Sheriff Staly has two grown daughters, Lauren and Diana, and three grandchildren, Aiden,  Lexi and  Adalynn.
