Case Update: Thieving Former Home Health Aide Rearrested After Second Victim Comes Forward

BUNNELL, Fla. — Tuesday morning, deputies with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit, in coordination with the Flagler County Sheriff Office Fugitive Unit arrested, for a second time, a former home health aide who had stolen from seniors under her care after an additional victim came forward.

In early January, management at HarborChase Assisted Living informed deputies that a second victim at their facility had reported fraudulent activity on their debit card. The victim reported that the card went missing during the time Katie Swain was employed as a home health aide and was assigned to the victim. The victim also reported missing $50 in cash.

Swain made 27 unauthorized purchases on the victim’s bank card, totaling $2,700 in fraudulent transactions. As with the other stolen card, Swain used this victim’s debit card as her own. She purchased $522.57 in items from BJ’s Wholesale Club, including a membership. She purchased food and drinks from Chik-Fil-A, Auntie Anne’s and Taco Bell. She also swiped the victim’s card for sweets at I Love Sugar and made over a dozen stops at various gas stations. The largest fraudulent purchase was two transactions at Home Depot totaling $807.95.

“Swain’s a senior-scamming, serial-swiping, snack-stealing, soda-sipping, super-shopaholic, who’s seniors’ savings spending spree was stopped by detectives,” said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. “She was entrusted to care for seniors but instead stole from them using their debit cards to buy things she really didn’t need thinking she could take advantage of them and not get caught. We greatly appreciate the cooperation from the many retailers who sent transaction reports and security camera video of Swain making these purchases.”

Home Health Aide Arrested for Stealing from Senior

BUNNELL, Fla. — Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a home health aide after she stole cash and a bank card from a senior under her care and used the debit card for hundreds of dollars of purchases.

On Dec. 31, 2025, deputies with the FCSO Problem Area Crime Enforcement and Fugitive Unit arrested Katie Swain, 32, of Pomona Park, following a month-long investigation into unauthorized purchases on a stolen debit card.

In early December, a senior resident living at a HarborChase of Palm Coast noticed several unauthorized transactions on his bank statement and that his wallet was missing cash along with his debit card. Through investigative means, detectives determined that Swain, a new hire at the facility, was a care provider for the victim on the day the cash and card went missing.

After reviewing bank records, a pattern emerged where most of the fraudulent transactions were made in Putnam County, near where Swain resides. Store security camera video shows Swain using the victim’s stolen bank card to make dozens of purchases. In total, Swain made $664.02 of fraudulent transactions on the victim’s bank card and stole $30 in cash. Among other items, she purchased gas, snacks, and groceries and also made multiple online purchases with the victim’s card.

“This woman abused her position of trust and authority as a home health aide for gas, donuts and trinkets,” said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. “She stole from a senior that truster her and used his debit card as her own but luckily for her, there are plenty of snacks she can buy with her own money from the commissary at the Green Roof Inn.

On Dec. 31, deputies arrested Swain for Fraudulent Use of Personal Identification Information and Grand Theft from a Person Over 65 Years of Age. She was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate.
