To help keep residents and visitors safe during Memorial Day weekend, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office will increase patrols on local roadways, waterways and beaches. Deputies will focus on aggressive driving, distracted driving, speeding, and impaired boating or driving, while maintaining a visible presence to deter crimes of opportunity.

“Memorial Day is more than a long weekend—it is a time to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “The best way to show respect for their sacrifice is to make responsible decisions for the freedoms you can enjoy because of their sacrifice. Have fun, be patient, and make responsible choices so everyone can have a safe weekend.”

In addition to increased patrols, the Sheriff’s Office will have dedicated DUI enforcement throughout the weekend to deter impaired driving and prevent crashes.

“Alcohol often flows more freely on holiday weekends, and with it comes an increased risk of poor decisions that can lead to DUIs, serious crashes, and fatalities,” Sheriff Staly added. “Residents are encouraged to plan ahead—use a designated driver or boat captain, call a rideshare, or arrange a safe ride home. If you drink, don’t drive or boat impaired, because the only thing waiting at the end of that road is the Green Roof Inn and the loss of your freedom.”

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to secure vehicles and property by locking doors, removing valuables from plain view, and reporting suspicious activity. Residents and visitors are also reminded to slow down, stay alert, buckle up, and give themselves extra time to reach their destination. If you “see something, say something” by calling 386-313-4911 to report suspicious activity.
