FCSO Employees Honored at 2026 Second Quarter Awards Ceremony

An off-duty detective and his family who rescued a drowning boy and deputies who stopped suicide attempts are among those who were honored during the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office’s 2026 Second Quarter Awards Ceremony held July 30 at the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Operations Center.
Sheriff Rick Staly awarded multiple Life-Saving Awards to employees for their roles in saving the lives of others. He also presented a Unit Citation, Certificates of Appreciation, and other awards to employees as part of the ceremony.
“Our employees give their all to save lives and make their communities a safer place on and off-duty,” said Sheriff Staly. “These honorees represent the dedication of our entire team, and it’s my honor to recognize the job these outstanding men and women are doing. I ask our residents to join me in commending them and be proud of their hard work.”
Three employees received Employee of the Month recognition and nine were recognized for reaching years of service milestones.
LIFE-SAVING AWARD – Detective Corporal Adam Barkoskie and Barkoskie family
On March 27, Detective Corporal Adam Barkoskie and his family noticed a teenage boy in distress while swimming at Rainbow Springs State Park. Corporal Barkoskie’s wife and 14-year-old daughter immediately assisted the boy and kept him above water after he suffered a seizure and lost consciousness. Corporal Barkoskie then pulled the boy to safety, coordinated emergency response efforts, and remained with him until first responders arrived. The entire family’s exceptional courage, teamwork, and decisive action saved the young boy’s life.
LIFE-SAVING AWARD – Detention Deputies Ty Jurgensen and Walker Skoglund
On April 17, Detention Deputy Walker Skoglund observed an inmate hanging by a bedsheet in a cell. He declared a “Code White” and, along with Detention Deputy Ty Jurgensen, entered the cell, removed the bedsheet, and found the inmate unconscious. The two detention deputies performed sternum rubs, successfully restoring the inmate to consciousness. Medical personnel assessed the inmate, determined he was stable, and he was transported to booking before being transferred to the SMA Crisis Center in Daytona. The immediate life-saving intervention by Detention Deputies Skoglund and Jurgensen prevented what would likely have been a fatal outcome.

On June 17, deputies responded to a Palm Coast residence after a man threatened to harm himself. Through coordinated investigative efforts with the Flagler Beach Police Department, the man was located inside a storage unit in Flagler Beach, seated in a running pickup truck with a pipe connected from the exhaust into the passenger compartment. Deputies and officers from both agencies quickly established communication, negotiated the man’s safe exit, and provided emergency medical care before he was transported under protective custody for further treatment.
The swift response, investigative efforts, decisive actions, and effective communication demonstrated by the deputies, officers, and support staff directly resulted in the preservation of life. Without their prompt intervention, the incident likely would have had a different outcome.

On May 31, deputies responded to a report of an armed domestic disturbance after receiving information that an intoxicated man had threatened to kill two victims while armed with a handgun. Deputies established a perimeter and safely removed both victims from the residence. Due to the suspect’s military background, criminal history, and reported access to a firearm, the SWAT team, Investigative Services Division, Crisis Negotiation Team, Criminal Intelligence Unit, Drone Unit, K-9 Unit, and Volusia’s Air One helicopter responded to assist. After the residence was cleared and the suspect was not located inside, he was found hiding in a neighboring residence and was taken into custody without further incident.
SPECIALITY SERVICE AWARD – Detective Sergeant Frank Gamarra and Corporal Austin Dalrymple
Detective Sergeant Frank Gamarra and Corporal Austin Dalrymple have each dedicated more than five years of exemplary service to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team in various capacities. Their commitment, professionalism, and specialized expertise have played a significant role in maintaining the team’s operational readiness and ability to respond to critical incidents throughout Flagler County.
SPECIALTY SERVICE AWARD – Sergeants Andrew Cangialosi and Ron Mello
Sergeant Andrew Cangialosi and Sergeant Ron Mello have each dedicated more than 10 years of service to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team in various capacities. Their commitment, professionalism, and specialized expertise have played a significant role in maintaining the team’s operational readiness and ability to respond to critical incidents throughout Flagler County.
CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION – Detective Maxwell Dorsey
Detective Maxwell Dorsey has consistently gone above and beyond through his exceptional investigative efforts over the past several months. He led multiple undercover operations throughout Flagler County, identifying illegal gambling establishments and coordinating with the Florida Gaming Commission and FCSO units to execute successful search warrants.
Operation Reel of Fortune resulted in four charging affidavits, four executed search warrants, and the seizure of more than $15,000 in illegal proceeds. Detective Dorsey also conducted inmate facility investigations that identified contraband distribution methods and resulted in criminal charges against two individuals.
CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION – Corporal Richard Petkovsek
On June 23, Corporal Richard Petkovsek responded to a call involving a missing person who was experiencing a mental health crisis and had expressed to family members that he intended to harm himself. Deputies canvassed the area in an effort to locate him.
Corporal Petkovsek located the missing man on a bridge near the Long Creek Nature Preserve. The man had a rope that he intended to use to hang himself from the bridge. The rope had already been prepared and was stored in the man’s backpack for that purpose.
Corporal Petkovsek intervened before the man could carry out his plan, preventing him from using the rope to take his own life.
CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION – Detention Deputy Timothy Richardson
Detention Deputy Timothy Richardson consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and commitment to the agency’s mission. He continually steps up when needed and goes above and beyond to ensure tasks and assignments are completed thoroughly and on time. His reliability and initiative have made him a valuable asset to both his shift and the agency as a whole.
In addition to his outstanding performance, Detention Deputy Richardson maintains excellent attendance and consistently displays a positive and professional attitude. He leads by example and can always be counted on to handle responsibilities with integrity and accountability.
Detention Deputy Richardson has also shown exceptional leadership skills through his willingness to assist and mentor new deputies. He takes the time to teach, guide, and support less experienced deputies to help them become confident and effective in their roles. His patience, knowledge, and leadership contribute greatly to the development of newer personnel and strengthen teamwork within the agency.
CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION – Deputy Ardit Coma
On June 17, 2025, a woman reported ongoing domestic violence and sexual abuse to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Ardit Coma, then a detective in the Major Case Unit, was assigned as the lead investigator, developed probable cause, obtained an arrest warrant, and the suspect was arrested.
Throughout the investigation, he provided the victim with support and guidance. On April 1, 2026, the victim wrote Deputy Coma a letter expressing her gratitude for his compassion, professionalism, and calm demeanor during one of the most difficult times of her life. She credited him with helping her move forward and emphasized the lasting impact of the care and respect he showed throughout the investigation, writing, “Your compassion, calmness, and the way you handled everything gave me strength when I had very little of my own.”
