The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office obtained an arrest warrant for Craig Stevens Jr., 34, of Daytona Beach, after an investigation determined he exposed himself to a 15-year-old boy and attempted to enter the teen’s shower at a Palm Coast gym.

On Feb. 25, deputies responded to the Planet Fitness on State Road 100 in Palm Coast after staff reported a possible sex offense in the men’s locker room. Employees told deputies a 15-year-old boy reported that an adult man, completely naked, had tried to enter his shower.

Surveillance footage showed Stevens entered the gym at 6:59 a.m. using a membership belonging to a family member and went directly into the men’s locker room. Inside the locker room, Stevens entered a shower stall completely unclothed and left the shower curtain open. The juvenile victim entered the locker room, noticed Stevens in the shower with the curtain open and his genitals visible, and walked away without interacting. The juvenile victim, wearing clothes because Stevens made him uncomfortable, entered a separate shower stall, closed the curtain completely for privacy, and began showering. Stevens walked to the juvenile victim’s shower stall, pulled back the curtain, and exposed himself again. The juvenile victim immediately said, “No!”

Stevens paused, then turned back toward the juvenile victim and said, “I thought you said I join you?” The juvenile victim again told Stevens “No!” Stevens then dressed, left the locker room, and immediately left the gym. Surveillance footage showed that Stevens was in the locker room for 27 minutes.

Detectives conducted a photo lineup, and the juvenile victim identified Stevens with absolute confidence. When detectives later interviewed Stevens, he denied any involvement and gave accounts that surveillance footage and the investigation proved untruthful.

Stevens is currently serving a four-year, six-month federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy and aggravated identity theft in the Middle District of Florida. Federal prosecutors said Stevens used an elderly victim’s personal identifying information and shared it with co-defendants, who accessed the victim’s bank accounts and applied for credit cards and loans. The scheme resulted in the theft of $19,762.38.

“This behavior is predatory, disgusting and illegal, and perverts like this only increase their aggressiveness,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “I commend the teen victim for the way he handled this perverted encounter and immediately reporting it. He likely protected others from becoming victims of this predator.”

Following a review of the investigation by the State Attorney’s Office, detectives obtained a warrant for Stevens’ arrest on one count of lewd or lascivious exhibition involving an offender 18 years of age or older and a victim younger than 16. The warrant was served on Stevens, who remains in federal custody. Stevens’ criminal history also includes felony convictions for burglary of a dwelling and possession of stolen property, along with misdemeanor convictions for petit larceny, shoplifting, and trespassing.
