Deputies with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrested two juveniles after an investigation into a car burglary in Palm Coast led to the recovery of stolen fishing poles.

On Sunday, May 3, deputies responded to the Union Court area to a report of a car break-in. The victim reported that multiple fishing poles were stolen from an unlocked truck parked in the driveway. The custom fishing poles were valued at $1,550.

Detectives developed a suspect vehicle after viewing a Snapchat video showing what appeared to be the stolen fishing poles and, through investigative means, determined the vehicle was in the Union Court area on the night of the burglary.

On Tuesday, May 5, detectives interviewed Jonathan Brown, 15, of Bunnell, and another juvenile age 12, of Palm Coast, with their mothers present. Detectives also recovered the stolen fishing poles from locations associated with the juveniles and returned them to the victim.

On Wednesday, May 13, detectives arrested both juveniles on a juvenile arrest order for burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and grand theft. They were transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility for processing and then taken to the Volusia County Department of Juvenile Justice without incident.

“These juveniles went carhopping and turned a neighborhood into their hunting ground fishing hole, but our deputies and detectives reeled in the facts — from social media and surveillance video to the recovery of stolen property and the arrests,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “If you leave your vehicle unlocked, you’re practically baiting thieves, so lock your car doors and take valuables inside.  Hopefully, these juveniles will learn a lesson and get back on the right track.”
